Favorite Husker Memory:

Going to my first Husker game. I had transferred to UNL from Iowa as a student back in '83. Even though I was feeling the tail end of the flue, I had decided to go to the game with my student ticket. I wasn't particularly a fan of Big Red or even Football - I had a very little understanding of the game and knew very few people in Lincoln, but I went. When I got to the stadium and came near the student section I looked up and saw how daunting that slide past all of those knees would be, not to mention my concern that I might still be contagious (and mostly my laziness). I decided to just go up to the fence by the sideline and see if I could watch the game from there. I really couldn't see past everyone on the sideline and just as I was turing away from the fence to leave, I heard someone yell out my name. I turned to look and saw one of the players yelling at me as he was running on to the field. It wasn't until he tilted his helmet back that I saw he was one of the guys form my Dad's church. I yelled something back about Onward Christian Soldier!! Oh, and kick their asses!" Not sure he heard everything, but he waved back and ran on to the field. I turned to leave again and suddenly I was confronted be a sea of smiling faces, apparently admiring the fact that I knew one of the players; or more importantly that he knew me. I would say that it made me feel all warm and gooey inside, but I think that was mostly the flu.
