From "Big Red Today" in the OWH.  Yikes, we have lost a couple of pitchers this summer also.  Either Erstad is cleaning house or he's loosing players.  I suspect he's looking for a little more from his players.

LINCOLN — Nebraska infielder Kurt Farmer has decided to end his playing career. He plans to stay at NU to earn his degree.

Farmer, an all-state honoree out of Columbus, started every game at first base as a sophomore in 2011, but spent most of last season as a reserve third baseman. The smooth fielder hit .250 in 25 games.

When reached Thursday night, coach Darin Erstad characterized Farmer's choice as a “life decision,” and one that apparently wasn't easy to make. Farmer's listed major is communication studies.

“Kurt Farmer's one of my favorite people I've met since I've been here,” Erstad said. “We're fully supportive of him.”

Nebraska will also be without the services of senior pitcher Tom Lemke, who's been granted a medical redshirt for 2013.

Part-time starter Jon Keller and reliever Jeff Stovall are no longer with the program, both deciding during the summer to transfer.

New to the Husker program this fall are six junior college transfers — pitchers Christian DeLeon, Caleb Hawkins, Michael Hoppes and Josh Roeder, and catchers Tanner Lubach and Corey Stringer. Freshman pitcher Colton Howell, out of O'Fallon, Mo., signed a letter of intent in the spring. Pitchers Jeff Chesnut (Millard South), Michael Hadden (Prior Lake, Minn.) and Matt Jones (Gretna), and infielder Jake Placzek (Papillion-La Vista) are also listed as freshmen.

Nebraska will host a walk-on tryout Tuesday. Fall practice begins next month.
