Cautious optimism

In reading various message boards, some of our fans think that with the coaching changes we have made that we'll be able to snap our fingers and go 10-2 just like that. Others feel that 8-4 is a little optimistic. Then there's talking heads like Mark "Jabba The Hut" May who say that Nebraska should be happy with 6-6.

To me, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I think going from 5-7 last year to 8-4, 9-3 this year will be the easy part. It's making the jump from 8-4, 9-3 to say 10-2 that'll be the hard part because the margin for error becomes much smaller.

Your thoughts?

I agree - there has been so much hype and optimism about next year's team. I'm not saying I'm not optimistic - just trying to be realistic. It's going to take a few years for the players to gel, learn new schemes and plays, etc. I don't think we can expect a first year coach to snap his fingers and we are instantly a top ten team.

I will be happy next season if we have a winning record. I think it's going to take some time for the Huskers to be on top again. I know I"m kind of setting my expectations low (or realistic, whatev) but this way if they do go 9-3, I have all the more reason to celebrate. Right?!

So, I do agree with Mark May (even though he is kind of a db). I don't think Nebraska fans should be unrealistic with their expectations of an instant turnaround.

I'm pretty much on the bandwagon. 9-3 would be a great season, get us in a bowl again and gain a little respect. 8-4 wouldn't hurt my feelings either, but the team would still be hurting in the respect department. The 2009/2010 seasons are the ones that I'm pumped about.

Get Bo's recruits in, not that the current players can't learn the system, it's just that with kids coming in will have their entire career to put it to practice instead of the 1-2 seasons with the current group.

The key will be the defense. The D-line has to be able to put pressure on, no surprise there, because we stunk it up last year. The lack of turnovers last year was abysmal, so I look to see more ball hawking on the field this season foreward. I'm still a little concerned about the DB position, but I am every year. We are always decent at the underneath stuff, but the long ball kills us year in and year out.

Our offense has proven that it can move the ball with Watson calling the plays. If we get complacent, all bets are off. Still not sure if we can play from behind. Joe can throw the ball well enough, but we still need a few Pro-calibre recievers that are real threats.

Thoughts??

I'm a little closer to "Sugar" Shayne Seibert's theory. Nefan4life, I'm in complete agreement that this year won't be so somple that we can snap our fingers and be a Top 10 team just because we have a new regime. I just feel very strongly that with any kind of coaching, Nebraska should never be worse than 8-4. To be a Top 10 team this year means being 10-2 minimum excluding B12 title games and bowl games. To get there we'd have to stay healthy and get every break we need.

Write this down, "We will be at least two games better than 6-6 no matter what that big piece of crap Mark May says!"
