LJS Ken Hambleton: Thompson rebuilding her life

http://www.journalstar.com/articles/2008/05/11/huskerextra/husker_s...

I don't know how many of you have followed this story but I knew Tressa back in my days as a Daily Nebraskan sports reporter whe she was at her peak. It saddened me to see her life spiril downhill but I'm happy that she appears on her way back and I hope it continues. You thoughts?

To be honest, this is the first time I've heard of Tressa. It's good to hear that she is getting back on track - getting involved with the community and other things that keep her away from the streets. I think that sometimes we as fans put our sports heroes up on pedestals, and maybe think they're bullet-proof or something. They're not, as we can see here, everybody has their own problems, right?

Hey Vince, I worked at the DN for a while too - I was an illustrator/graphics person. When did you work for the DN?

I don't want to blame her family because Tressa has to accept culpability in her actions (i.e. drug addiction) but in watching the episode on A&E, I think her family laying the guilt on her for being gay contributed to her going the direction she did. Not that I'm trying to start any debates on homosexuality but I think if her family would have simply accepted who she was, even if they didn't like it, I don't think her drug addiction would have reached the point it did. What's even worse about her dad making her feel guilty about being gay was that he cheated on his wife and that led to divorce. What a hypocritical prick but I digress. Anyhow, enough of that.

I worked at the DN from 1995-1997 as a sports reporter going through numerous editors, Tim Pearson, Jeff Griesch, Trevor Parks, Mitch Sherman. What years did you work at the DN?

I see, Vince. I didn't work there that long. I was there from 2005-2006, Amber Jensen was the art director at the time. Ah, how I miss the college days!

Are you still doing writing or reporting in any capacity - for a newspaper, magazine, etc?

I'm an old man next to you though I'm not quite Rip Van Winkle.:) Yes, I am working as a sports reporter/photog for two award winning weekly newspapers in the Napa Valley. The St. Helena Star and Weekly Calistogan. I've bee a sports reporter for about 10 years (12 if you count my DN time). I also worked as a freelance writer from 1999-2005 for Silver & Black Illustrated, a magazine that covers the Oakland Raiders. Yes, I knew Coach Callahan then. My goal for the longest time was to make it to a larger paper but with the layoffs and buyouts I'm kind of glad I never got there. What do you do for a living?

I'm a graphic designer for an organic coffee company in Lincoln at the moment. I was at UNL (98-04, 05-07) long enough to get two degrees, architecture and fine arts. I decided to go the graphic design route and am liking it so far. I try to keep myself busy with little projects - Husker Spot and Husker Auctions being two of them. Since I've started these, I've been trying to promote Husker Spot as much as I can - it's tough to get traffic with so many web sites out there! I think that Husker Spot has the most to offer (as far as Husker sites out there) I just need to find the best (and cheapest!) way to spread the word:) I really can't wait for next season - it's amazing I think at how much people follow Nebraska football, even in the off season. That's just awesome. By the way, thank you for participating in the forums and such! I wish all the members were as active as you!

I try to stay as active as I can but with a 14 month old daughter and twins artriving in November my mind drifts as you might expect.
