Dear Fellow Husker fans,
Before I go into the game last night let me give you guys all some info. First off, I am hoping to do better this year on the recaps. I finally have the internet at home again. Secondly, for last night's game I did something quite interesting. I was listening to the game on internet radio while watching it via the net. Funny thing is the radio broadcast was about 45 seconds faster than the video. So how did it make it fun? Easy, I would listen to the play and then get to watch it, kinda like a post game review and knowing what was to come. Awesome fun. Another thing, I am to blame for the Wyoming comeback. let me explain. I started the game wearing my kick butt Nebraska jersey. Well, I'm wearing it all the way until just after NU's last score. The problem came when I had to go to work. The jersey came off and Wyoming mounted the comeback. Thankfully the clock ran out before the Pokes collected the upset.
Seriously, lets talk about the game.
#1. Has the NU defense ever given up over 600 yards of total offense in a game and won it? There are a couple of games late in the Big 12 years and the one Oklahoma St game in the mid 80's (score 63-42) where the offenses both put up over 500 yards but nothing in the 600 area that I have seen so far.
#2. I'm disgusted with the officiating in terms of the roughing/horse collar calls. Let me explain, in the 3rd quarter Gregory was nailed for a 15 yard penalty roughing the passer on a key 3rd down. Problem is the QB still had the ball. I saw some replays and maybe you can call horse collar so I let it slide. Later on in the quarter I don't remember who our RB was but the Wyo defender hit high, arm up around the neck/shoulder pad area just like the Gregory hit and NO FLAG. Consistency on the calls. I was jocking with my beloved bride its just the officials not wanting NU to play so hard.
#3. Speaking of that call. The defense needs to get over these close calls but the refs quicker. On the Gregory play it was 2 or 3 plays before the defense brought back the intensity.
#4. The offense has to minimize mistakes. Costly turnovers and untimely penalties are killers.
Game ball: For game 1 I have to give out 3. First goes to Stanley Jean Baptiste the only Blackshirt in my mind who earned the right to keep it. Second game ball goes to Kenny Bell. If he keeps playing like this all year Martinez will have his go to guy. Third game ball goes to the fans, they packed Memorial Stadium to capacity again setting a new attendance record just over 91000.
On to Southern Miss. Oh yeah, I will find that white Nebraska shirt that I have. At leat I can wear it under my work uniform. God bless and Go Big Red.
P.S. If you comment with a question I'll do my best to answer.
