Dear Fellow Husker fans,
Ok, get up, wake up, the scare is over. It's kind of funny, but all week I was having the same feeling following the Washington game. I got my blog post out late, then kick-off was at a weird time for us in PAC-10 country (4PM) and there just wasn't something right in the world when the game kicked off. A few hours later and a restart of the ole heart and we're sitting here talking about surviving to win 17-3 over SDSU. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce to you what I like to refer to as App State Syndrome. It's a now common phenomenon that all started when little Appalachian State went into the Big House and beat Michigan 34-32 on Sept. 1st 2007. Ever since you have a smaller school step up and rise to the occasion by taking the big boys down to the wire and/or winning the game (see NIU/Iowa 2009). Fact of the matter is this, never confuse being a smaller school with having inferior talent. There was talent on this SDSU team and for the 40 players on that roster that came from Big 12 country (including 13 from Nebraska) you better believe all those players and coaches had this date circled since spring football. Without a doubt they wanted to play their best football Saturday night and win or lose they wanted perform in front of a big crowd. They did.
The Good: The Blackshirts did hold SDSU as a team to only 3 points and less than 250 yards total offense. There was plenty to be said in terms of besides their opening drive SDSU was hogtied most of the game.
The Bad: Offensive consistency. This is the part of the game I felt where things were not right. I even talked to fans on ESPN.com and they said the same thing. In fact some, myself included were thinking maybe a change of pace was needed at the QB spot. No, I am not jumping ship on T. Martinez. He gives this team the best chance to win IMO. What I am saying is this, you're ahead but your struggling, might be time to change it up and try something different just to get some rhythm. The offense was out of sync all game long and the final score showed it.
The Bad 2: Kyle Minett had 28 carries for 112 yards. Ouch. Who out there doesn't think Daniel Thomas wont be licking his chops when he watches this game film.
The Ugly: This game as a whole. It felt like one of those full moon on Halloween Night football Saturday games. The hope is you have gotten that one ouch game for the year out of the way now. Another good thing is that next week is a bye week so the coaching staff has 12 days to chew some butt, correct some major mistakes, and figure out a way to stop the run. Oh, on the flip side, they also get a chance to kick start Taylor Martinez as well.
On a bright note: At least we're not Texas, 34-12 at home to UCLA? This is the same squad that KSU beat earlier in the year.
Gonna keep it short and sweet, have to have something for the bye week. God bless and Go Big Red.
