Dear Fellow Husker fans,
You know there comes a time about once a year that a perfect storm happens ad you just know either A. things are going to be awesome or B. you're in for a run of hard work, little sleep, and little of anything else especially time. Well, the past couple of weeks I was in the midst of B and well, now that it is over I have time again and so without further delay, let's talk.
I wanted to have little fun this week so during a bit of downtime at work a wrote up a list of 26 things I wanted to talk about using each letter of the alphabet. So, let's get running with the rundown.
A. A-Rod
Ok, before I get started on this one I want to put out some disclaimers since I feel I might be hitting on a touchy subject here. First, I am not a fan of the Yankees or A-Rod. Secondly, my team, the Cubs had their own run-in with a player on roid rage. After that was all came out I actually got rid of all things Sosa in my house. Finally, I am a father of two young boys and besides the dangers of drugs, alcohol, STDs, and everything else, I get to have the HGH/steroid talk with them as well.
I put steroid./HGH use up their with lying in terms of moral transgressions. All this talk about who is and who isn't using is doing nothing but damaging the fine art that is the games being played and making kids who might be a step slow, a pound or two too light, etc start using this stuff to get that extra advantage. When you put this crap in the body you might help the body short term but in the long run it can and will kill you. Just ask Lyle Alzado, d-linemen Raiders back in the 80s. Look at all the professional sports entertainers known as WWE employees that have died because of this garbage. Guys and girls, this stuff is wrong and it has no business in our sports, in our lives, in our world. If a player is using this stuff they are lying to themselves, their teams, and their fans. Roger Clemens' legacy is shot up to pieces because of "still suspected" use. Mark Mac went into hiding after he made himself look like a idiot in front of Congress. There is no HoF for these guys and the worst part of it all, every player that ever played a inning of professional sports, especially baseball, has gotten the dreaded "is he or isn't he on roids" look. That by itself is wrong and that is why this stuff has no business being in our sports.
B. Basketball, baseball
We are well within the season of college and NBA basketball and guess what, spring training for baseball is just around the corner. As much of a dark shadow that the roid drama has cast over the sporting world, there is still the feeling that the sports are getting back to purity, one step at a time.
C. Combine
Coming up just around the corner we have the NFL's version of a meat market, the scouting combine. Here you get to see invited college stars put on one last show for the scouts. Now, I am not against the combine, I think its a good idea, but I don't think the NFL Network should be adding the pressure of having their cameras taping the stuff. Besides, we all know the Combine King doesn't always make a great NFL player, right Mark Maumula.
D. Draft, Daytona 500
All the juniors are declared, the scouts are headed to Indy and all the other Pro Day locations, you know what this means. The draft is just around the corner. April is a long way off, so to tide the time, I am tuning into NASCAR. Another disclaimer, I love NASCAR. I like the idea of strategy that goes into a pit stop, what adjustments to make, even when to pit, and of course the ever present gas and go towards the end of a race. This is a team sport and the pit crew guys are athletes. DO you know most pit crew guys are former college football players or collegiate wrestlers. These guys can flat out move.
E. Early enrollment
Ah yes, the item that only seems to affect college football. Said high school football star graduates high school in December so that in April instead of going to prom he can start to make a name for himself in spring camp. Welcome to Nebraska Cody Green.
F. Football
Yes, the playing seasons have ended, the boring Pro Bowl is done, the senior star bowl games are over (good job Marlon Lucky), and it seems like a time to let the football relax for a bit. Not so fast, we still have video game football and for those of us with kids, grab them and the ball, take them to the park and throw a few post patterns withthe kids. It'll wear them out a bit and it is great father/son, mother /daughter, family time.
G. Groundhog Day
I only put this in here cause I couldn't think of much for g besides golf. Doesn't the weather at all the resorts the PGA play at make you wish you were there just for a weekend to check out the rays, get a tan, and see girls in bikinis. Ok, maybe for most of us males that is a big time yes.
H. Halftime
Anybody catch Bruce on stage at SB halftime? Why do we have this stuff anyway? I have no need for a rock concert/monster truck rally/circus of the stars halftime show. Halftime is time to restock on the food, use the restroom, fan adjustment in terms of maybe switching t-shirts to get the team going, and to get ready for the second half. I skip halftime shows to get ready, do you?
I. Intangibles
It's what the kid has inside, is he a winner, what is his personality like, is he Matty "Ice" Ryan or Ryan Leaf? There is no number to judge3 it and guess wrong and you could be looking like San Diego during the years between Leaf and Brees.
J. January
That great month of the year is over and we as fans were treated well. Great bowl games (especially the Gator), great college basketball, awesome NFL playoffs and we all had prayer number (insert number here) that the "Disruptor" Suh stuck around at the fabulous U of N for his senior season. On a side note, did you see Matt Slauson at one of the senior games."The Nebraska University". Matty, let Miami have the trademark on the line, we have the hand signal *raises a number one signal high in the air*.
K, L, M
I added these three together because it fits. The line goes like this Kiffen: Lane, Monte. This is the true father/son pairing that we as fans have to enjoy. Sports is about family, it's about spending those extra precious hours with the ones you love. Look at the Griffeys playing baseball together in Seattle. Junior was all smiles, you don't see that these days. Check out family Ripken in Baltimore, the sons playing the sport their dad taught them, the sport they loved with their dad as coach at its highest level (and I am 99% sure clean). Even clan Hawkins at Colorado get the father/son time even if it is at the enemy school. The fact of the matter is, if the HGH/PED are what bring the dark cloud on sports, family ios what brings back into the light and rays of the sun. Embrace the family, that's what it is all about.
N. Nebraska
There is no place like Nebraska. I was talking to my wife the other day and she asked me if we ever had the money or opportunity to move back to Nebraska would I take it. I was a big time 100% yes. I love the climate, I love the people, I love the small towns like Ord, Grand Island, Scottsbluff, York, Kearney, Broken Bow, and Burwell. There is just something awesome in Nebraska that is called "know your neighbors". I have lived in the same house in sunny AZ for going on 8 years now and I don't know my neighbors. We just do not connect and that is the sad thing about AZ. Family is more than the immediate family. Family is the people you hang with and treasure, your neighbors and our second family, the Husker football team. There is no place like Nebraska. We are Nebraska.
0. (countdown to) October
Yeah, V-Tech is on the schedule, but I can't wait till Big 12 season starts, especially that Thursday nighter in Mizzou. BTW, that night if I still have Wed/Thur off at work, you will see me at Buffalo Wild Wings in SE AZ. Look me up, i will be the one in Nebraska Red.
P. Pelini
A shout out to the coaches that Coach Pelini brought in to bring back the tradition to Nebraska. Coach Osborne could not have picked a finer man and that fine man could not have assembled a finer team of assistance. The team has taken on the personality of the coaches and they honored their coaches with the patch in memory to Coaches' Pelini dad who passed away before the Gator Bowl. This team has come a long way and the future looks bright.
Q. Quiet Calm
This time of year, mid Feb is the quiet calm before the storm of perfection. You have in the coming months March Madness, baseball spring training, high school sports state tourneys, NFL free agency, spring camp for football, NASCAR, and golf. This has to be the second greatest time of year. I especially love March Madness. In college I had the opportunity to watch every game of the first 4 days of the tourney two years in a row (no, I didn't skip class, I arranged my class schedule just right). What a great time and what a great memory, thank you Ty Edney for your coast to coast vs Mizzou. If it wasn't for that, my bracket was gonna be blown to pieces. Also, thank you Bryce Drew for the back to back game winners for little known Valpo, you to saved my bracket, for 24 hours anyway.
R. Recruits
This is something I love about Coach Pelini, he never mentions a recruit by name on signing day. It's always something like we have a good class, this class has character, this class will learn fast and grow up quickly, etc. It is a welcome breath of fresh air from the rivals.com/ESPN high school football showcase that puts a big red target on said high school stud.
S. Spring
Spring is in the air and I get to have front row seats to a couple spring training football games, I just have to pick which games to go to during my vacation in March. I have to say, even though that dark cloud looms, I have a calm optimism that baseball is cleaning up. Since I have no more letters involving baseball I want to mention that even though football is number thre (God, family, Husker football), baseball is and always will be in the top 10 for me. I played the sports a couple of years and I enjoyed throwing a baseball in the backyard with my dad. I even had the opportunity (see LKM) to play softball on the same field with my dad at family reunions in Ord, Nebraska and a couple community all-star games in the small town of Harlan Iowa. Thank you dad for teaching me the love of the game.
T. Tennessee
I only bring this up because I think the university should try to reign in on Coach Lane. I don't think he knows all the recruiting rules and his mouth so far is casting a shadow on a university I have always thought as being a class act. Win a game when it counts Coach before mouthing off. Calm down sir, spring ball hasn't even started yet.
U. Unbeaten
This is the time to look into the crystal ball and see who might have the chance to go unblemished in 2009. By what just is coming back, Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, and USC are the early front runners. Oh yeah, no more un-beatens in college basketball. It's gonna be a fun March Madness. Go Huskers.
V. Variables
The numbers in the combine. The speed, size, agility, standing long jump, and the test score (Vince Young scored a 5? You get a three if you spell your name right. Just kidding). These are the numbers that combined with the intangibles give you the Combine Superstar Stud that doesn't always translate to great pro.
W. Wrestling
A shout out to a sport that in the high school and college realm that I truly love, wrestling. You and me, one on one, winner take all type of deal. I love watching the sport and those day long tourneys are just awesome. Heck, if you are lucky, you get to see a football stud kick some butt in his winter conditioning program. Thank you Clinton Childs.
X. X-rays
Back to the combine, after all the numbers are racked up, the intangibles set, and the test is taken the collegiate player has all his medical records looked at by team doctors. Said Combine Stud could be taken out by just a hairline fracture not previously seen. Another side on this, Michael Crabtree will not participate due to a sprained ankle. How much you want to bet that x-ray is getting a long hard look by team doctors for the first 10 teams in the draft.
Y. Yale
A small shout for a long running tradition, Yale vs Harvard in almost any sport and academic arena. Also, I couldn't figure out anything else for the letter. On another note, I just want to add that in college we had a couple of regular happenings that the top division doesn't get to see. The first is a Saturday double header of football in the afternoon or morning and volleyball in the evening. It was always fun to go from the dorm room, cross the street to the stadium for the football game, back to the dorm to get ready for volleyball and catch the last of the Nebraska football game, cross another street and head to the arena for college volleyball. The other happening was women's basketball at 5 PM to be followed by the men's game at 730 or 8 PM. I loved going to college at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Z. Zero-16
To all those that follow the Detroit Lions, the only way to go from here is up. Keep the faith, Tampa Bay got it turned around in oh, 15-20 years.
Thank you all for your time in reading my posts and thank you for your comments. God bless you all and Go Big Red.
