Live from BugahaWest: Week 2, Week 3, Tidbits from my vacation to Nebraska

Dear Fellow Husker Fans,

Greetings everybody and the Big Red machine has done exactly what they were supposed to do on paper, go into Sept 27th with a 3-0 record. Under the surface however, some stuff has to be changed, most glaring is the fact the defense has not lived up to its potential as of yet. Before I get into that however, let's look into the last two weeks and some other things.

Week 2 vs SJSU: The final score on this one was 35-12 and to say I was nervous is a understatement. Do you realize at halftime, SJSU had more yards rushing than we had total. And the score wasn't anything pretty either. I headed off to work with Central Florida flashbacks circling through my head. Well, it looks like in the 4th quarter the entire team picked it up and maybe, just maybe the d was coming around because they were a stopping everything.

Game ball: Niles Paul. His kick-off return for a TD more than likely took out the last gasp of hope for the Spartans.

Week 3 vs NMSU: This game was the closest to a complete game that the Big Red has had so far. The offense got it going late in the first quarter and never really stopped until Coach Pelini called off the dogs and put in the second string. However there is still a glaring number: 339. Why do I pick this number, because it is the total offense that NMSU put up against the D. Yes, I am excited that the running game finally showed up to play some ball, but where is the D? My hope is that coaches Bo and Carl Pelini use the next week and a half firing the old d up to a point of rage. The defense has to stop people and they have to start stopping people now. Has frustration set in for me yet? No, but this bend but not break garbage has to change to break some bones D.

Game balls: Joe Ganz as he joins some fine company when he caught, threw, and ran for a TD. Marlon Lucky, Quentin Castille as they spearheaded the rebirth of the running game.

Shockers of the Week: Auburn Miss St. 3-2. I thought when I read this score the hurricane affected play. That was not the case and I hope and wish NU starts playing D like these two teams did.

S. Florida 37 KU 34: It's not the fact USF won this game that shocks me, more of the fact from start to finish this was a exciting and great game to watch. Good game all around.

USC 35 OSU 3: The shock, this game was over at halftime. Maybe those title game losses aren't a fluke for OSU.

UNLV 23 ASU 20: ASU was supposed to content for the PAc 10 championship and maybe a BCS bowl bid. Not anymore.

Maryland 35 Cal 27: Cal scored 21 points in the 4th quarter to make this game look closer than it really was.

Ok, I know many of you were probably thinking, what happened to BugahaWest Week 2 tidbits. Well, I took a much needed vacation and headed back to Nebraska for some much needed R&R and, well, my kid sister was married on Saturday. Yes, the wedding was over before kick-off and yes at the reception the game was on more than one small hand held radio which was cool. To say how big a Husker fan both sides of the wedding party is, for the announcement of the bride and groom the DJ played the Tunnel Walk and everybody stood up and clapped in time. Awesome fun and the game was cool to.

On a side note, I want to tell a little story. My best friends, my wife, and I went to Husker Hounds on Friday so I could pick up a proper license plate for my truck. Well, we were walking around seeing everything they had and I looked at a particular cool black t-shirt. I pulled it off the rack and I was shocked. There it was in all it's beauty, a "Operation Blackout" t-shirt and it was really cool. They put the game date on it and everything and on the back it said in big bold letters, Beat VT. I called to my wife and she looked at it. When she looked it over her only words were, "well, you got it out somehow." My reply was, "we're gonna pull this thing off. People are listening." To everybody out there in support of Operation Blackout with your letters, telling your friends, and whatever else, this is just cool and thank you.

Well, that is about it for this week. Don't go too insane during the off week guys, we need you all there for the 27th. I know it isn't even close to being the same, but try to find a game or 2 of interest to watch this weekend. Personally speaking I am looking forward to the West Virginia-Colorado game tomorrow night. Thank you for your time and your comments. God Bless and Go Big Red.

Great post, Chris. I agree with you about the defense. We will not be Big 12 contenders if our defense doesn't step it up and start stopping teams, especially against the run. VA Tech will tell us where we're at for sure on this.
