From the NY Times last month.   Interesting story of Derek's wife and her family's NU history, Tom Osborne and how a reconciliation of sorts.

  • Thanks for the link, SVH.

Sadly, with dominating teams in college football come athletes the likes of Christian Peter.  Like I've said many times, it's hard to win championships with altar boys.  Ugly to think some fans prefer wins to morals.

Personally, I'll take 4 losses and a coach who prefers high character kids over immature over-hyped ESPN stars.

So far I am impressed with the apparent low level of police reports involving Bo's players.  That alone is something to be proud of as a Husker fan.

BTW, Peter and Phillips were definite black marks on Osborne's record.  The saddest part is that if we know of those, how many others were there that we will never know about?

    • Country - Agree 100%.

From my point of view the 1994-97 championship runs will forever be tainted by the miserable off the field problems that followed.

From my point of view it was the change in recruiting by Osborne that led to both the extreme on the field successes and the extreme off the field failures.

We last won a conference championship in 1999 with kids from the recruiting classes of 1995-99.  I think that parents and players alike began to give NU second thoughts and went elsewhere.

The program hasn't been the same since.

I do give Bo credit for the much improved character of the team under his watch.

  • Nice, SVH.  Thank you.
