Recruiting: Huskers courting three visitors

It's about to get nuts. The sprint toward national signing day is on across the country.

The Huskers had one commit subtracted off their list a couple days ago, when defensive end Darius Slade suddenly switched from Nebraska to Michigan State. But there is little time to stop and examine the wound when it comes to recruiting.

Do that and you get left behind.

Onward: Nebraska has three visitors to Lincoln this weekend, all intriguing in their own way.

Their names (click on each one to see their Hudl highlights):

DeSean Blair, WR, 6-4, 185, Jacksonville, Fla. (currently committed to Louisville)

Chris Jones, DB, 6-0, 175, Jacksonville, Fla. (currently committed to Purdue)

Mikale Wilbon, RB, 5-9, 195, Chicago (high on Vanderbilt and Nebraska)

Blair and Jones are high school teammates, both from Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville, where Nebraska just spent a week.

Jones is an interesting visit because it represents the first DB to come to Lincoln with new secondary coach Charlton Warren in the fold.

It'll be worthwhile to hear what Jones' response is when the visit is complete.

Blair, who has been committed to Louisville since last April, is one of those prospects who seems to be building more and more interest with programs as signing day comes close.

"He's quite a popular guy now," tweeted veteran recruiting analyst Jeremy Crabtree a couple days ago.

Nebraska already has a 6-foot-4 wide receiver commit in Jariah Tolbert out of New Orleans. Blair is another big body to target, which makes sense with Quincy Enunwa no longer in the building.

Blair already has seen something on his Lincoln visit that he hasn't seen before.

"I've finally seen snow for the first time !!! yes!! My life Is made," he tweeted.

Wilbon, rated a four-star running back by Rivals, might be one of those recruiting stories that carries its way into a signing day announcement.

He visits Lincoln this weekend and then Vanderbilt next weekend. Vandy lost super recruiter James Franklin to Penn State but also just hired Derek Mason from the Stanford tree.

Mason is no doubt hungry as he takes over a new job. But it sounds like Nebraska has put a strong pitch out to Wilbon, sending running backs coach Ron Brown to see him on Thursday prior to this visit.

The Huskers still do have some strong options on the board at running back, including Corey Avery, who is visiting Lincoln next week. Avery is from Dallas Carter High School, which is familiar to recruitniks and those who read "Friday Night Lights."

As for the chances of securing any of these three visitors this weekend, Steve Wiltfong, a national recruiting analyst for 247Sports, believes it's quite doable.

"Nebraska could land all three official visits on campus this weekend come Signing Day," Wiltfong tweeted.

This weekend is important, but next weekend is going to be a tornado of activity. There are currently six visitors scheduled and that list is likely to grow.

We'll get there soon enough, and come with more details to that list as that weekend approaches. That's all providing the 50 mph winds don't blow us away.

  • Slade is a Big loss. Michigan State didn't take him because he can't play.
