Ray great points.Carnes is the great mystery for me as well. Although I got the feelings last year the coaches were hesitant in putting Carnes in. Never felt as though if Taylor was struggling they would insert Carnes for a few series like they has in the past with Cody Green or Zak Lee. The Kellogg story should be one that we should be jumping all over. A walk-on that rises to 2nd string and is a home town boys, although I don't remember anytime when a walk-on has at QB has played much as QB. Yeah there are cases in the 90s when a walk-on had to start due to injury.
Walk-on starting on the line over scholarship kids? Well back in the glory days lots and lots of the lineman came from Nebraska and were walk-ons but It makes one wonder...
I sure don't understand how Carnes got moved from 2nd to 4th behind Martinez. All the time he has had to develop, albeit, never getting to play much, I would have thought he could still have been good enough to beat out the other backups. Wasn't he has good as originally advertised? I guess not. Or maybe, he gave up, never getting to play, kind of like Turner for a while
Who knows, but the depth chart is full of suprises, including the OL with a premium on walk-ons. Is the scholarship talent that bad there? Why can't we get more out of those plus 25 players at that position? If a good defense shows up today or soon, and Martinez is running for his life, I guess we will know the answer.
