How 'bout that NU volleyball team?  3-0 over the weekend.  Well, two were "gimmies" but how 'bout Megan Haggerty and her 17 kills and .600 hitting percentage in only her second college match.  The first one being the night before.

Nebraska's win over #1 ranked UCLA, a team loaded with talent and well deserving of the #1 ranking, was big.  Huge in fact.  Many new questions for Cook's squad this season.  Who would be the middle blockers?  How would Libero Dykstra do in her second season, can she fill the shoes of Banworth?

The knowns seemed to be Mancuso, Werth, and setter Lauren Cook.  Both Werth and Mancuso look stronger and quicker than last season and are proven reliable workhorses for the Huskers.  Cook is one of the best college 5-1 setters.  What she lacks in blocking power in the front, she more than makes up for with outstanding defense.

So, new faces on the court.  Thramer and Haggerty were outstanding at middle this weekend.  It appears to me that the Huskers are on the way to another B1G championship, and another top 5 ranking.  Let's hope the opening weekend is just a preview of bigger things to come.

Although I'm not sure matches get much bigger than playing the #1 ranked team in the country and gutting out a 5 set endurance contest for the win.  My player of the game goes to Morgan Broekheis who struggled at the start of the match, and got better as the night wore on.  She stepped up in the 5th set with 5 kills, bringing home a win for the Huskers.

GO BIG RED VOLLEYBALL!!!

  • Unbelievable match! Set the DVR for the B1G's 2012 NU preview, and they recorded the match against UCLA as well. Really, really gutsy, tough, unified, blue-collar approach by our girls! Very impressed by this crew's capabilities.

    GO.

    BIG.
