Defense

Has Pelini lost his touch or is he spending too much time on the offense?

We had no interceptions and got the long bomb put dropped on us. We don't have a quarterback who can throw like that and only one receiver who can catch. Our Offense didn't score enough to win a game like this but the defense allowed way too many points and seemed to just give up in the last quarter.

  • Brady Hoke just took Michigan that was beat down in last years Gator Bowl 52-14 to Mississippi State to a 11-2 season and a victory over Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl (BCS my friends).   Bo has completed 4 years and we have not improved.

P.S.  Michigan crushed us this year also......

    • Michigan clearly overachieved in 2011.

They gained 184 yards last night vs. VT (less than 50 in the second half).

VT had 7 key mistakes on special teams.

      1) VT kickoff out of bounds at start of 2nd quarter. Give up field postion as struggling UM offense starts with ball at 40.

      2) VT roughing the punter on 4th and 10. Led to TD drive in 2nd quarter.

      3) Now down 7-6, VT fumbled subsequent KO at own 25 with :43 left in 2nd quarter.

      4) Michigan ineptly attempted the "Little Giants" fake FG play used by Michigan State vs. ND in OT during the 2010 season. VT snuffed it out, drove holder/passer into the ground while he got away with a "pop up" pass directly to 2 VT defenders. Both defenders lept into the air and they collided with each other. The ball popped out of their hands and fell into the arms of the UM long snapper who caught it for a first down at the VT 8 yard line. Both teams looked like the Keystone Cops on this play. UM then kicked an FG to lead 10-6 at halftime.

      5) With the game tied at 17, VT stupidly ran a fake punt wide to the right (or was it a Rugby Kick optional play?) from the UM 45 with 7:23 left rather than kicking it deep and forcing the inept UM offense to go 80+ yards for a score. Led to UM FG so VT down 20-17.

      6) VT held on the subsequent KO return and penalized half the distance to the goal line on critical last possession where VT botched a 3rd and 2 deep in UM territory wiht a false start. Resulting 3rd and 7 play gained 6 yards and VT had to settle for a game tying FG.

      7) VT missed 37 yard FG from center of the field in first possession of OT. UM then kicked a 37 yarder to win.

I guess that you can say that UM made one or two plays of the 7 above (forced KO fumble and stopped a TERRIBLY executed fake punt).

When I looked at this game my verdict is that the 6th graders beat the 5th graders 23-20 in OT. This was the most sloppily played game in the history of BCS bowl matchups...and that comes as no surprise as neither team belonged there.

How in the hell did we lose to Michigan by 4 TDs?

      • exactly Tom, how did we lose to Michigan or Northwestern or get blown out and laughed at all the way back from Wisconson?

Osborne lost some games but I don't recall these kind of embarrassments.

My point is I thought four years ago that we would look like South Carolinas defense by now.  I was being hopefull that our offense might be able to not turn the ball over and score at least 30-35 points every game.  Guess I was delusional.

Oh well atleast we're not Minnesota or Penn State

        • Russell - You make a great point. South Carolina's program would be a PERFECT benchmark for NU.

Spurrier has re-created himself as a football coach in the "modern" SEC. He has a tough, athletic defense and an offense with a solid, but not spectacular QB, a "big play" WR in Jeffereys and a "big play", tough RB in Lattimore.

The players should already be in place on the defensive side of the ball as Bo is entering year #5. They aren't.

On the other side we have Rex (one year left), Abdullah (hope he pans out) and Bell (still emerging). That's it.

We have a long, long way to go.

  • Shutout for last 3 quarters.

South Carolina playing without Lattimore and top receiver but still scored 30.

Abby - Bo has been here for 4 years...these are HIS players!

    • correct.  These are his players.....he's not getting the top recruits that should be coming to play at a "traditional power" such as Nebraska.  Something needs to change.....quick!
